From Middle Radestrian svals, from Old Radestrian slalss, inherited from Proto-Radic *slwalhs, from Proto-Hirdic *slwálḵəs, from Proto-Laenkean *slwalk-. Cognate with Laefevian hlwalus (“cone”).
