Laefevian

Etymology

Definitive origin is unknown but it must be a Proto-Laefevic innovation. Considering the suffix appears on roots denoting some kind of physical characteristic, one hypothesis suggests that it comes from a suffixed *bʱatas (“eye”), as seen in savat (“blind”) (which is from Proto-Laenkean *sɯʔbʱatas).

Pronunciation

Suffix

-at (contracted stem)

  1. (unproductive) A structural suffix in certain adjectives that typically denote some kind of physical characteristic.
*njotad (“to read”) → njotoð (“reading”)
sênad (“to write”) → sênoð (“writing”)
tanhluvad (“to fulfil”) → tanhluvoð (“fulfilment”)
unhñôevad (“to subtract”) → unhñôevoð (“subtraction”)
