Etymology
From Middle Radestrian vór, from Old Radestrian lór, inherited from Proto-Radic *lōr, from Proto-Hirdic *lóḡus, from Proto-Laenkean *logos. The loss of initial [w] was a sporadic development in the back vowel environment (see also úcus), cf. vjeiș (“fifth”) and vúsus (“fist”), related words where it was maintained. Note the irregular genitive forms vjø and vív, which do maintain the initial v-.
Pronunciation
Numeral
úr (genitive singular vjø, vív)
- five (5)
- Ven hrâs-aș vjø lyejðis.
- I need five people.
- —Byvitú gjøș ran hrâs?
—Ven vív-aș hrâs.- —How many do you need?
—I need five. (noun implied)
- —How many do you need?
Usage notes
- Followed by the short genitive plural.
- The genitive form vjø is used before a noun, whereas vív is used on its own.
- Historically, vív was used before vowels, but this usage is now archaic.
